OpenTransmission work is the conversation where a customer decides whether to keep the car. The number that decides it is not the repair price on its own — it is the repair price next to the replacement price, and next to what the car is worth. Put all three in front of them.

Repair or replace
Pick the path a diagnosis actually points to, then read the verdict against the half-of-replacement rule.
| Path | Hours | Low | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fluid and filter service | 1.2 | $80 | $250 |
| Solenoid or valve body | 3.5 | $790 | $1,390 |
| Internal repair (in-car or out) | 8.0 | $1,420 | $2,520 |
| Remanufactured unit | 8.0 | $2,920 | $4,920 |
| New replacement | 9.0 | $3,760 | $7,260 |

“Repair or replace” hides three options in the middle. A fluid and filter service fixes a surprising number of shift complaints on a unit that has never been serviced. A solenoid pack or valve body is a bolt-on that solves specific codes without opening the case. An internal repair means the case comes apart. A remanufactured unit is a known quantity with a warranty. A new replacement is the last and dearest.
The sheet prices all five side by side, because the customer’s real question is which one they are buying.
If the repair costs more than half of a replacement, replacement is usually the better buy — you get a warranty on the whole unit instead of on one part of an old one. The verdict line applies that test to whatever path you picked, against whatever replacement band you enter.
A stored code is a starting point, not an answer — the code guide explains why. Automatic transmission faults look alike from the driver’s seat: slipping, harsh shifts, a flare between gears. They are not alike underneath. A scan, a live-data road test and a fluid inspection separate them, and that time gets billed — price it on the diagnostic fee calculator and put the finding in the cause column of the repair order.
On a unit with unknown service history and no hard codes, a fluid and filter service is the cheap first move — $80–$250 for a drain and fill. It will not save a burnt clutch pack, and you should say so before you take the money.
