Solid against blinking

A steady amber light means the onboard diagnostics have logged a fault that is outside specification but not immediately destructive. Drive gently, avoid heavy load, and book the car in.

Reading the code

An OBD-II scan tool reads the stored trouble codes. Many parts stores will do it for nothing, which is genuinely useful — it turns “a light came on” into a specific string you can look up before you speak to a shop.

Ask for two things beyond the code itself: the freeze-frame data, which records the engine conditions at the moment the fault set, and whether there are pending as well as confirmed codes. Both change the diagnosis.

A code is not a diagnosis

This is the whole point and it is the thing most often misunderstood. A code names the circuit or the symptom the computer observed, not the failed part. P0442 says the evaporative system has a small leak; it does not say the leak is the fuel cap, though it often is. P0171 says bank one is running lean; the cause could be a vacuum leak, a dirty mass-airflow sensor, a weak fuel pump or an exhaust leak upstream of the sensor.

Testing separates them, and that testing is what a diagnostic fee pays for — one to one and a half hours of labor at $50–$180 at an independent shop independently, or $100–$400 or more at a dealership at a dealer. Replacing the part a code appears to name, without testing, is the most reliable way to buy the wrong component twice.

Worn spark plugs are the most common single cause of a P0300, which makes it worth checking the service history before anything else — and worth putting plugs on the service card so it does not happen by surprise.

Readiness monitors

Clearing a code does not fix anything; it erases the evidence and resets the readiness monitors — the self-tests the computer runs as it drives. A scan showing no codes but several monitors incomplete usually means somebody cleared codes recently, and that is worth knowing.

It is also the reason a car with a recently cleared computer will fail an emissions test even with nothing wrong: the monitors have not run yet. And it is the single most useful check on a pre-purchase inspection.
