The published bands

The published bands: $150–$600 per axle, pads only; $400–$900 per axle with new rotors; and $800–$1,800 for all four corners. Those three numbers cover most of what a passenger car will ever be quoted, and the spread inside each one is parts choice and labor rate.

What the bands do not tell you is which of the three jobs your car needs, and that is the only question that matters. A shop quoting the top of the all-four band on a car that needs one axle of pads is not expensive; it is quoting a different job.

What pad material changes

The whole spread is tens of dollars on a single axle. A shop that never mentions the choice is usually fitting ceramic and not charging for the conversation — which is fine, but a customer towing a trailer through mountains should be offered semi-metallic and told why. Pads only, or pads and rotors

Rotors have a minimum thickness stamped on the hat: the discard spec. A rotor above it, running true and without deep scoring, can take a new set of pads. A rotor below it, or one with runout you can feel in the pedal, cannot — and machining it, which used to be the middle answer, mostly is not any more because modern rotors leave the factory close to their discard limit.

Where the labor goes

Book time for pads on one axle is around 1.2 hours; pads and rotors around 1.8. At the independent benchmark of about $140 per hour that is roughly $170 and $250 of labor, before parts. A dealer running $20–$40 per hour above a nearby independent adds another $25–$70 to the same job.

Knowing when you are due

Pads are measured in millimetres of friction material. New is typically 10–12 mm; replacement is usually recommended at 3 mm and is mandatory before the backing plate touches the rotor. Grinding means the pad is gone and the rotor is being cut — that is when a $250 job becomes a $600 one. Uneven or cupped wear points past the brakes to worn dampers. The other item to do while the wheels are off is a fluid flush, a job that is mostly labor, priced by the shop. It is the cheapest line on the ticket and the one most often skipped, and it is worth putting on the service card so it is not a surprise next time.
