The framing is usually wrong. It is not quality against price — many aftermarket parts are made by the same suppliers who make the OEM ones. It is a question of which specific part, on which specific car, and what happens if it is not exactly right.
An OEM part is the one the vehicle manufacturer supplies, in their box, with their part number. An aftermarket part is anything else that fits.
The complication is that car makers do not manufacture most of the parts they sell. A large share come from independent component suppliers building to the car maker’s specification — and many of those suppliers also sell the same component under their own brand, in a different box, for less. That box is aftermarket by definition and identical in fact.

On a $300–$650 per axle with rotors brake job, about 60% more than the aftermarket equivalent on the parts half is real money for a component where a reputable aftermarket brand is genuinely equivalent.
Filters, brake friction, wiper blades, batteries, belts, hoses, suspension bushings, shocks and struts, alternators and starters. On these, a known brand is at least equivalent and often better — performance brake compounds and heavy-duty suspension parts routinely exceed the factory specification.

Offer the choice, price both, and say which you recommend and why. A customer who is shown an OEM line and an aftermarket line with a real reason attached almost always picks one happily; a customer who finds the part number later and prices it themselves does not.
The margin is the same either way if your matrix is right — 55–58% gross profit on parts on cost, whichever box it came in. Build it on the matrix calculator and put both options on the estimate.
