The two prices

A transmission fluid service is quoted at $281–$340 on a typical car. The spread underneath that is two different services wearing one name: $80–$250 for a drain and fill, and $125–$250 for a machine flush.

They are not the same job and they do not achieve the same thing. Knowing which one you are being quoted is the whole exercise.

Drain-and-fill against a flush

Put the interval on the customer’s service card so it is planned rather than argued about. A drain and fill takes the pan down, which is how the filter gets changed and how you get to look at the magnet — and what is on that magnet tells you more about the transmission’s health than the fluid colour does. A flush exchanges more fluid but usually never opens the pan.

On a unit with a service history, either is defensible. On a unit with no history, the drain and fill is the better first move precisely because it lets you inspect.

The “lifetime fluid” claim

Plenty of modern transmissions are sold as sealed with fluid filled for life. Read that precisely: it means the fluid lasts as long as the manufacturer intends the transmission to last, under the manufacturer’s definition of normal use. A car that tows, sits in traffic or lives somewhere hot is not in that definition.

Specialty fluids and why they cost more

Dual-clutch units, CVTs and some European automatics take fluids that are not interchangeable with anything else and are priced accordingly, which is what pushes those services well above the standard band. Using the wrong specification in a CVT is a transmission-destroying mistake, not a compromise — which is why it belongs on an itemised invoice with the part number — this is one of the few places where the fluid part number is genuinely non-negotiable.

When a fluid change cannot help

Burnt fluid, metal on the magnet, or slipping under load mean the damage is mechanical. Fresh fluid will not restore a worn clutch pack, and a shop that sells one as a repair for those symptoms is selling hope. At that point the question is repair against replacement — from about $80 for a fluid change to as much as $3,400 for a repair against $2,500–$6,000 for a replacement — which the transmission cost calculator resolves with the half-of-replacement rule. On a manual gearbox the friction part is the clutch itself: when it slips, the customer is looking at a new clutch cost, and no fluid service changes that.
