Clutch replacement cost: the kit vs the labor
A clutch replacement is two prices stacked together: a clutch kit you can look up at your supplier, and the hours it takes to get the transmission out of the way and back in. RepairPal puts the whole job at $1,630–$2,047 nationally, before taxes and fees, split like this:
Clutch kit and parts
$809–$843
Labor (mostly gearbox out and in)
$821–$1,204
Clutch replacement, before tax
$1,630–$2,047
Nationally, RepairPal’s parts band is narrow and its labor band wide. The labor follows the drivetrain: how the gearbox comes out, what has to come off with it, and whether all-wheel drive adds more. That is why two quotes for the same car can be hundreds apart, and why the honest number is built from the labor guide. None of it includes your door rate, the flywheel decision or anything the teardown finds.
This page is about the friction clutch in a manual gearbox. Clutch packs inside an automatic are a transmission job: see the transmission repair cost calculator.
Clutch replacement price by model
RepairPal breaks its national figure out by model. The spread is wide: the cheapest band below is less than half the dearest. How the transmission comes out of the car moves the price far more than the clutch kit does.
| Vehicle | Low | High |
|---|---|---|
| Ford F-150 | $962 | $1,243 |
| Ford Explorer | $1,143 | $1,411 |
| Nissan Altima | $1,297 | $1,669 |
| Honda Civic | $1,571 | $2,240 |
| Toyota Corolla | $1,829 | $2,314 |
| Toyota Camry | $1,987 | $2,590 |
| Honda CR-V | $2,019 | $2,598 |
| Honda Accord | $2,038 | $2,632 |
The lowest figure is marked in green. RepairPal does not say which model years each band covers, so check that the car in your bay has the clutch the band assumes before you lean on it. A customer who found one of these numbers online is comparing your quote to it.
Mini Cooper, BMW, Audi and Ford clutch replacement cost
Most clutch searches name a car. RepairPal’s model pages split those into labor and parts, which is the useful part: on the Audis the parts line alone is over a thousand dollars.
| Model | Total | Labor | Parts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ford Focus | $1,115–$1,407 | $624–$915 | about $491 |
| BMW 328i | $1,560–$1,907 | $699–$1,026 | $861–$881 |
| Ford Fiesta | $1,523–$1,967 | $952–$1,396 | about $571 |
| Mini Cooper | $2,026–$2,589 | $1,205–$1,769 | about $821 |
| Audi A3 | $2,256–$2,850 | $1,244–$1,826 | $1,012–$1,024 |
| Mini Cooper Countryman | $2,410–$3,032 | $1,330–$1,951 | about $1,081 |
| Audi A4 | $2,705–$3,287 | $1,244–$1,826 | about $1,461 |
RepairPal publishes no clutch estimate for the Subaru models or the Fiat 500, so there is no outside figure to check a quote against. Build those from the labor guide’s clutch operation for the exact model and drivetrain, and your supplier’s kit price.
What the gearbox-out hours cost
On RepairPal’s figures labor is $821–$1,204 of the national bill. At about $140 per hour, one trade survey’s independent figure, that is about 6 to 9 billed hours. Use that as a sanity check, not as book time: the real number is the clutch operation in your labor guide for that engine and drivetrain.
Nearly all of those hours are access. The clutch sits between the engine and the transmission, so the transmission has to come out. On a rear-drive car that means the driveshaft, the crossmember and the gearbox. On a front-drive car the transaxle comes out with the drive axles, and the engine is usually supported while a mount is off. All-wheel drive can add more to remove. The kit itself goes on quickly once everything is out of the way.

Book time also sets the technician’s pay on a clutch job. A flat-rate tech is paid the guide’s hours however long the job takes, an hourly tech the clock. Which way your shop pays changes who absorbs a seized bolt; the flat rate vs hourly comparison walks through both.
Clutch kit lines on the estimate
RepairPal puts parts at $809–$843 nationally. That is a clutch kit and little else. A quote that stops there leaves out the lines that cause the arguments later, so list each one, even the ones you expect to be zero:
| Line | What to write |
|---|---|
| Clutch disc | The friction plate that wears. Always new. |
| Pressure plate | Clamps the disc to the flywheel. Sold with the disc in a kit; fit them as a pair. |
| Release bearing | Pushes the pressure plate fingers. Usually in the kit. Replace it while the gearbox is out. |
| Pilot bearing or bushing | Sits in the end of the crankshaft on cars that have one. RepairPal lists it as coming out on the job. |
| Flywheel | Resurfaced or replaced after inspection. Its own line, priced once you have seen it. |
| Rear main and input shaft seals | Optional while it is apart. Any leak that soaked the old clutch has to be fixed. |
RepairPal’s advice on leaks is worth repeating to the customer: engine oil or transmission fluid on the clutch ruins the new one too, so a leak found at teardown is repaired with the clutch, not after it. Whether the kit is the carmaker’s or an aftermarket brand is its own decision, covered in OEM vs aftermarket parts.
Clutch and flywheel replacement cost
The flywheel is the line most likely to change a clutch quote after teardown. With the transmission already out it adds little time, so it is decided then, not left for a second visit. What you can do with it depends on which kind the car has.
A solid flywheel: resurface or replace
A one-piece flywheel can often be resurfaced, but LuK warns against taking it too far: over-machining removes metal the flywheel needs to absorb heat, shortening clutch life; improper machining can cause interference, no release and slipping. Ask the machine shop whether the face is still within the maker’s limit after the cut. If it is not, a new flywheel goes on the estimate instead.
A dual-mass flywheel: replace, never machine
Some manual cars use a dual-mass flywheel, a two-part flywheel built to damp engine vibration. LuK’s service note for them is blunt. Turning the friction surface is not permitted, because a thinner friction face may no longer hold together at the flywheel’s rated burst speed. A dual-mass flywheel that has been dropped must not be refitted. Always use new fixing bolts; dual-mass flywheel bolts are usually single-use. So a worn dual-mass flywheel is a replacement line, and the new bolts are a line under it.

Clutch repair cost: check the hydraulics first
Not every clutch complaint needs a clutch. RepairPal’s diagnosis starts outside the bell housing: a leaking clutch master cylinder, a misadjusted cable or a worn pivot can all make a car hard to shift. Only when those are ruled out does the transmission come out.
| Repair (RepairPal national) | Total |
|---|---|
| Clutch slave cylinder | $278–$365 |
| Clutch master cylinder | $388–$487 |
| Clutch replacement | $1,630–$2,047 |
The gap is the reason to check first. A customer quoted for a full clutch whose real fault was a cylinder will find out at the next shop. Where the slave cylinder sits inside the bell housing, though, it is a gearbox-out job and belongs on the clutch quote as its own line. Put the check on the diagnostic fee line so the time is billed either way.
What a clutch replacement quote should list
- Diagnosis: the hydraulic or cable check and road test, with what was found.
- Clutch replacement labor, from the guide line for that drivetrain.
- Clutch kit: disc, pressure plate, release bearing, with the brand.
- Pilot bearing, where the car has one.
- Flywheel: resurface or replace, marked “after inspection”.
- Flywheel bolts, new where the maker calls for them.
- Seals while it is apart: rear main, input shaft, as approved.
- Hydraulic fluid and bleed, or the cylinder that failed.
Each line separate, each with its own approval. When the flywheel turns out to be past resurfacing, you are pricing a line the customer already saw marked “after inspection”, not explaining a bigger total. Write it up on the repair order the same way.
Comparing two clutch replacement prices
When a customer brings a cheaper clutch change cost from another shop, read the lines, not the total. Gaps to look for: a flywheel left off, a kit without a release bearing, or labor quoted for the two-wheel-drive version of an all-wheel-drive car. Showing your lines next to theirs often settles the conversation.
