The BLS median
The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual wage for automotive service technicians and mechanics at $50,620 a year (median, May 2025). Median, not average — half of working technicians earn more and half earn less, which is a more useful shape than a mean that a handful of very high earners can drag upward.
This is the government’s own occupational survey rather than a jobs-board estimate, which is why it is the number worth anchoring on when every other source disagrees.
What moves a technician’s pay

The last row is the one unique to this trade, and it is why two technicians in the same bay on the same pay scale can take home very different amounts.

Flat rate against hourly
Under flat rate a technician is paid the book hours on the job, whatever the clock says. Beat the book and you are paid for time you did not spend; lose to it and you are not paid for time you did. Under hourly pay the shop carries that risk instead.
Both models are common and both are defensible. What matters is that the model determines behaviour: flat rate rewards speed and punishes a slow diagnosis, which is why flat-rate shops need to be careful how they pay for diagnostic time. What it means for a shop
The rule of thumb is 2.5 to 3 times the technician's hourly wage. On a about $140 per hour door rate that implies a loaded technician cost somewhere around $47–$56 an hour — wage plus payroll taxes, insurance and benefits, not the wage alone.
Shops that budget the bare wage and forget the burden discover the gap at the end of the first year. The rate worksheet asks for the burden percentage explicitly for that reason, and the startup calculator carries payroll as a monthly line.
The outlook
BLS projects 5% growth, 2025–2035. The interesting part is not the headline number but the composition: as vehicles add high-voltage systems and driver-assistance sensors, the diagnostic half of the job grows and the pure-mechanical half shrinks.
For a shop that means training and tooling are recurring costs, not one-off ones — $62 per standard test plus a $34 registration fee per order per test is trivial beside a scan platform subscription.
