AUTO REPAIR SHOP MARKETING IDEAS

Fix the leak before you build the funnel
A shop running below the 80–90% productivity target does not have a demand problem, and buying more demand will not fix it. A shop whose effective labor rate sits well outside within 5–10% of the posted door rate of its posted rate is losing money on the cars it already has.
Both of those are cheaper to fix than any advertising campaign, and both have to be fixed first, because marketing multiplies whatever the shop already does. On 3–9% net net, a campaign that fills a leaky bucket loses money faster.
The channels, ranked
| Channel | Cost | Time to work | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Service reminders to past customers | Near zero | Immediate | Filling next week |
| Referral programme | Low | Weeks | Customers who already like you |
| Local business profile and reviews | Time only | Weeks | Being findable at all |
| Neighbourhood direct mail | Medium | Two to three drops | A new location |
| Local service ads | Medium to high | Immediate | Buying demand you can convert |
| Content and video | Time-heavy | Months | Specialists, differentiation |
The ranking is deliberate. Everything above the direct-mail line is either free or nearly free, and it is the half most shops skip on the way to buying ads.
Local search is the floor, not the strategy
Most people looking for a shop start on a map. A complete profile — hours, services, photographs of the actual building, a phone number that gets answered — is table stakes, and it is free. Reviews accumulate from asking, once, at the counter, at the moment you hand the keys back.

Referrals, made deliberate
Word of mouth is the strongest channel a repair shop has and the one most often left to chance. Making it deliberate is small: ask at handover, give the customer something concrete to hand on, and thank the referrer in a way they notice.
Measuring it
Ask every new customer how they found you and write it on the repair order. It is one field and it is the only attribution an independent shop needs. After ninety days you will know which channel is producing, and you will usually be surprised.
Judge each channel on gross profit, not car count. A discount oil change that brings in cars at a loss is a customer-acquisition cost, and it is only worth it if those customers come back for real work. Price the loss leader honestly on the estimate calculator so you know what you are spending.
