The current fees

ASE charges $62 per standard test plus a $34 registration fee per order. The registration fee is per order, not per test, which is the single most useful thing to know before booking: taking four tests in one order costs one registration fee, and taking them in four orders costs four.

Advanced-level tests are $124 per advanced-level test (L1R, L2R, L3R) — roughly double, because they are composite exams that assume you already hold the underlying certifications.

What a full A-series costs

The A-series runs A1 through A9 and covers engine repair, transmissions, suspension, brakes, electrical, heating and air conditioning, engine performance and diesel. Booking all eight standard tests in a single order is $34 plus eight times $62 — $530 in test fees.

The last two rows are the same eight certifications and a $238 difference. Batch the registrations.

Recertification and the cap

Certifications expire on a five-year cycle. Recertification tests are capped at $186 of tests, $220 maximum per recertification order — so a technician recertifying in six areas at once pays the same as one recertifying in four. Batch these too.

The alternative is the Renewal App at $52 a year, which delivers a question per area per month rather than a sitting. For a technician holding several A-series certifications it is usually the cheaper and less disruptive path.

Beyond the test fee

Study material, practice tests and paid preparation courses are where most of the real spend sits, and none of it comes from ASE. Two years of documented hands-on experience is also required for full certification — a test pass alone gives you a provisional credential, not the patch.

Does it pay

Against a technician median of $50,620 a year (median, May 2025), $530 of test fees is a rounding error if it moves the wage at all. The honest answer is that certification does not automatically pay more — it opens doors, particularly at dealerships and fleets, and it is a hiring signal a shop can advertise.

For a shop, the argument is different: certified technicians are a marketing asset and a real efficiency input.
