What a head gasket replacement costs
RepairPal’s estimator puts the average head gasket replacement at $2,543–$3,337 before taxes and fees, with labor at $1,633–$2,397 and parts at $910–$941. Read that band for what it is: a national average across common cars, not a quote. It leaves out your door rate (see dealer versus independent labor rates), the machine shop, and anything the teardown finds.
The useful part is the split. The gasket set is a small share of the ticket. Most of the money is the hours it takes to strip the top of the engine, get the head off, and put it all back. That is why two cars with similar parts bills can be a thousand dollars apart, and why the only honest head gasket replacement cost is one built from the labor guide for that engine.
If the damage goes past the gasket, this is the wrong page. A warped block, a spun bearing or coolant in the crankcase for weeks moves the job into engine repair cost territory: rebuild, reman or used engine.
Head gasket replacement cost by vehicle
The same RepairPal page breaks the estimate out by model. The spread is the point: the engine layout and what sits on top of it move the price more than the badge does.
| Vehicle | Low | High |
|---|---|---|
| Ford F-150 | $3,351 | $4,421 |
| Toyota Camry | $2,818 | $3,799 |
| Chevrolet Silverado 1500 | $1,947 | $2,465 |
| Honda Accord | $2,300 | $2,958 |
| Honda Civic | $2,254 | $3,068 |
| Toyota Corolla | $2,564 | $3,449 |
| Nissan Altima | $2,515 | $3,348 |
| Honda CR-V | $2,578 | $3,419 |
The lowest figure in the table is marked in green. These are national figures with no tax, no fees and no location in them. Use them to check that your own quote is in a sane range, never as the quote. A customer who found one of these numbers online is comparing your estimate to it, so show the labor hours and the machine-shop line separately and the difference explains itself.
Why the head gasket bill is mostly labor
On RepairPal’s figures labor is $1,633–$2,397 of the bill. At about $140 per hour, a common independent door rate, that is roughly 12 to 17 billed hours. Treat that as a sanity check on your own number, not as book time. The real figure is the head gasket operation for that engine in your labor guide, plus whatever the guide lists as additional time.
The hours go to access. RepairPal puts it plainly: several under-hood parts come off before the engine is even reached. Manifolds, the valve cover, sensors, brackets and hoses, and on an overhead-cam engine the timing drive, all come off before the head bolts are reachable. RepairPal also describes the job as typically taking several days, which matters as much as the money: the car is off the road and the customer needs to know that up front.

Inline, V and Subaru boxer engines
An inline four or six has one cylinder head and one head gasket. A V6 or V8 has two, and so does a flat (boxer) engine. When one side fails on a two-head engine, quote both: the second gasket costs little next to the hours already spent getting the engine apart, and the other side has seen the same heat and the same miles.
Subaru head gasket replacement cost
Subaru’s flat engines put a head on each side of the block, which is why a Subaru head gasket job is priced like a two-head job, not a four-cylinder one. The tightening procedure is long as well. Fel-Pro’s torque tables list eight steps on the 2004–2008 2.5-litre SOHC Subaru flat-four (EJ251/EJ253): torque, loosen 180° twice, re-torque, then three angle turns. Before you quote, check whether your labor guide’s operation for that model includes removing the engine; on a flat engine, access is most of the price.
The head goes to the machine shop
A new gasket on a warped head is a comeback. Fel-Pro’s installation tips say to check both the head and the block with a straightedge and a feeler gauge, and give these limits for the head and block combined:
| Measurement | Max out of flat |
|---|---|
| Three-cylinder, along the length | 0.003 in. |
| Four-cylinder, along the length | 0.004 in. |
| Six-cylinder, along the length | 0.006 in. |
| Any engine, across the width | 0.002 in. |
Past those, the surfaces are machined flat. Multi-layer steel (MLS) gaskets, which most current engines use, need a flatter and smoother finish than the older composite type, so a head that would have sealed a composite gasket can still leak on an MLS one. Your service information has the exact finish spec for the engine in front of you.
Two habits from the same Fel-Pro tips cost nothing and prevent the comeback. On an aluminum head, let the engine cool completely and loosen the bolts in the reverse of the tightening order, or the head can warp on the way off. And clean the bolt holes: a dirty bolt can throw the torque reading off by up to 20 ft-lb.

What goes on the parts lines
RepairPal’s parts band is narrow because the gasket set is a commodity. The lines that vary are the ones a quick estimate leaves off.
| Line | Why it is there |
|---|---|
| Head gasket set | Always new. A used gasket has already compressed to the old surfaces and may not reseal. |
| Head bolts | New where the engine uses torque-to-yield bolts. Where the maker allows reuse, inspect every one. |
| Coolant | A full refill, and a flush if combustion gas or oil has been in the system. |
| Oil and filter | Change both if coolant reached the oil, before the engine runs for long on the new gasket. |
| Machine-shop work | Check, and resurface if out of flat. Priced after the head is on the bench. |
| Whatever caused it | If an overheat started it, the radiator, fan, pump or thermostat that failed goes on the estimate too. |
The last line matters most. A head gasket often fails because the engine got too hot first. The water pump guide covers the most common way that happens, and fixing the gasket without fixing the cause sells the customer the same job twice.
Confirm it before you quote
A head gasket quote built on a guess is the most expensive mistake on this page. RepairPal notes that oil and coolant found mixed, in the engine or in the cooling system, often point to the gasket, and lists two related codes: P0217 (engine coolant over-temperature) and P00B7 (engine coolant flow low or performance). Neither code proves a failed gasket. They tell you where to test.
| Test | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Cooling-system pressure test | External leaks, and a system that will not hold pressure |
| Combustion leak (block) test | Exhaust gas in the coolant |
| Compression or leak-down test | A leak between cylinders, or into the cooling jacket |
| Oil and coolant check | Oil in the coolant, or coolant in the oil |
That is real bay time, and it is billable. Price it with the diagnostic fee calculator and get it approved before the teardown estimate, so the customer pays for the answer whether or not they go ahead. If the car came in on a warning light, the check engine light codes guide covers what to pull before you start.
Is a head gasket repair worth it?
On a car worth a few thousand dollars, a head gasket repair cost in RepairPal’s range can be most of what the car is worth. RepairPal’s own advice is that when many components need replacing, or the engine needs rebuilding, the owner should weigh that against another car. Put the numbers in front of the customer instead of an opinion: the repair or replace calculator sets the quote against what the car will be worth repaired and what a replacement costs each month.
If the teardown shows more than a gasket, stop and re-quote. The engine repair cost guide lays out the next paths: machine-shop rebuild, reman long block, or a used engine.
Writing up the head gasket estimate
- Diagnosis, already approved and on its own line
- Head gasket replacement, book hours from your labor guide
- Additional time: second head, accessories, engine removal where the guide calls for it
- Parts: gasket set, head bolts, coolant, oil and filter
- Machine-shop work, pending inspection
- The cause: whatever made it overheat
Each line on its own, each with its own approval. When the machine shop calls with a surprise, you are adding a line the customer already knew might come, not explaining a bigger number.
