WATER PUMP REPLACEMENT COST

The cost band

A water pump replacement runs $885–$1,134, split parts $524–$604, labor $361–$530. Unlike most parts jobs, the labor half of that is the half that moves — and what moves it is one design decision the manufacturer made years ago.

Belt-driven or accessory-driven

DriveAccessPractical effect
Serpentine / accessory beltFront of the engine, visibleA shorter job; pump alone is sensible
Timing beltBehind the timing coversSame teardown as the belt — do both together
Timing chainBehind the chain coverThe most labor; often a full front-of-engine job

Find out which one you have before you compare quotes — it is a ten-minute look, not a guess. Two shops quoting $500 apart on the same “water pump” may both be right, if one of them has read the engine.

How a failing pump shows itself

Three signs, in the order they usually appear. A coolant drip from the weep hole under the pump, which is the pump telling you the seal has gone. A whine or growl that changes with engine speed, which is the bearing. And a temperature gauge that climbs in traffic and settles at speed, which is flow.

None of these are wait-and-see items. A pump bearing that seizes on a belt-driven engine takes the timing belt with it, and on an interference engine that is an engine, not a pump — the same stakes described in the timing belt guide.

What overheating actually costs

If the gauge is in the red, the honest advice is stop, let it cool, and have it moved. A shop that tells a customer this on the phone before quoting anything has already earned the job.

Doing it with the belt

On a belt-driven pump, the combined job costs barely more than the belt job alone — $889–$1,291 covers the labor for both, and the pump adds parts. Doing them separately means paying the same three-to-five hours twice, which is why every competent shop quotes the kit and the pump together at every 60,000–100,000 miles.

Put both on the customer’s service card at the same mileage, and price the combined job on the estimate calculator so the saving is visible on the sheet rather than asserted at the counter.
