AUTO REPAIR SHOP INSURANCE COST
· 9 min read

The premium bands
Garage liability runs $1,300–$2,500 a year. All-in shop insurance averages $107 a month, about $1,286 a year, and a business owner’s policy — liability bundled with property — averages $149 a month, about $1,787 a year.
Set against $70,000–$150,000 and up of startup capital, insurance is a small line. It is also the line where being under-covered costs the most, because the exposure it covers is the entire value of every customer’s car sitting in your bays tonight.
The gap general liability leaves
A general liability policy covers a customer who slips in your waiting room. It does not cover the customer’s car — the one sitting on your lift with a signed repair order against it. Vehicles in your care, custody and control are excluded from standard general liability by design — and for a repair shop that exclusion removes the single largest thing you are exposed to.
The coverages a shop actually needs
| Coverage | Responds to | Optional? |
|---|---|---|
| Garage liability | Injury or damage arising from garage operations | No |
| Garagekeepers legal liability | Customer vehicles in your care | No |
| Workers’ compensation | Technician injury | Legally required with employees |
| Property / contents | Lifts, tooling, the building if you own it | No |
| Commercial auto | Shop-owned vehicles and test drives | If you own vehicles |
| Garage operations errors | Faulty-work claims after delivery | Worth quoting |

What moves the premium
Payroll and sales are the two big rating inputs — bigger shop, bigger premium — and workers’ compensation in particular rates directly off payroll, which is why the $50,620 a year (median, May 2025) technician median matters to your insurance and not only to your hiring.
After that: what you work on (heavy trucks and exotics rate higher), whether your shop does body work or paint, the value of the vehicles you routinely hold, your loss history, and your state. Two shops the same size in different states can differ substantially on the same coverage.
Buying it well
Quote garagekeepers on the real number, not a comfortable one: count the cars on the lot on your busiest night, not your average one. Get three quotes from brokers who write automotive risks specifically, because a generalist broker will often quote general liability and miss the exclusion above entirely.
Then put the annual premium into the startup calculator as both a one-off and a monthly line, and into the rate worksheet as fixed cost — because insurance is one of the overheads your door rate has to carry, and it is easy to leave out of both.
